Carpathian Wood-Fired Hot Tub at Lisova Hatyna-CHAN
A traditional Carpathian hot tub for 8 people with an open wood fire and a fresh herbal infusion, set in a forest clearing 300 m from the nearest road — Soimy village, Zakarpattia.
What a Carpathian hot tub (chan) is
The Carpathian chan is a traditional mountain bathing ritual, used by Hutsul shepherds in the high Carpathians for generations. A large iron cauldron is filled with mountain water, a herbal infusion of pine, juniper, mint, thyme and other local plants is added, and the water is heated from below by an open wood fire. Guests soak in 38–42 °C water under the open sky, breathing in the herbal steam — the back, shoulders, neck and lower back release tension that ordinary saunas rarely reach. It is not a jacuzzi and not a sauna: it is an authentic mountain ritual combining hot water, herbs, wood smoke and the sound of the forest.
At Lisova Hatyna-CHAN, our chan sits in a forest clearing right next to the cottages. While you bathe, you hear only crackling firewood, rustling leaves and birds — no traffic noise, because the nearest road is 300 metres away through the forest. That setting is what makes our hot tub stand out from the dozens of Carpathian estates offering a similar service.
Benefits for body and mind
- Muscle relaxation and pain relief after long drives, hiking or training
- Better circulation and detoxification through deep sweating
- Immune-system boost from the herbal vapours, especially in cold months
- Stress relief — the combination of heat, conifer aroma and forest silence works as a natural antidepressant
- Better sleep — most guests fall into deep, restful sleep the same evening
The chan is traditionally not recommended for high blood pressure, acute cardiovascular conditions, pregnancy or fever. Check with a doctor in case of doubt.

The best time for the chan is the evening, after a hike or a trip to the Shypit waterfall or Synevyr lake. Many guests book the tub on their second evening when the body is tired and the mind is fully unwound.
How the session works
- 1.5–2 hours before your slot the host lights the fire and the water reaches 38–42 °C.
- A fresh herbal infusion is added — pine, juniper, mint, thyme, oregano (varies by season).
- Guests change in the cabin, take a warm shower and enter the tub.
- 2-hour session with extensions possible. Cool-down breaks in the gazebo with tea.
- A warm shower afterwards — and the best sleep of the week.
Around the hot tub
Right next to the tub: a gazebo with a BBQ grill, a wooden swing and a hammock. In winter, guests love to step out of the hot water straight into the snow — a real Scandinavian-style contrast. In summer, the forest stays cool and a local mountain river offers extra refreshment.
Within 30 minutes: Shypit waterfall, Pylypets chairlift, Kelechyn mineral springs. A hot chan after a mountain hike is the classic evening at Lisova Hatyna-CHAN.
