What to Pack for the Carpathians — 3-Day Checklist
We host ~500 guests a year and keep seeing the same mistakes: someone forgot a jacket for +5 °C, someone left their swimsuit for the hot tub, someone arrived in shorts on a snowy day. Here is our tested all-season checklist.
Basics (every season)
- Documents (passport, driver licence, car insurance)
- Cash — not every spot accepts cards
- Charged devices + power bank
- First-aid kit: paracetamol, ibuprofen, activated charcoal, plasters, antihistamine, allergy meds
- Hygiene: toothpaste, body towel (we provide bed linen), soap, shampoo
- Swimsuit for the hot tub
- Indoor slippers / warm socks
- Tick repellent (May–October)
Winter (Dec–Feb, March)
Layered clothing:
- Thermal base (top + bottom, merino or synthetic)
- Fleece mid-layer
- Membrane or down jacket
- Winter trousers
- Hat, thin liner gloves + warm gloves
- Scarf or neck warmer
- Winter boots with grip
- Spare warm socks (min. 3 pairs)
Activities:
- Ski wear (if skiing)
- Sunglasses (snow reflects strongly)
- SPF 30+ sunscreen
- Hypoallergenic face/hand cream
Driving:
- Winter tyres
- Shovel in the boot
- Ice scraper
- Winter washer fluid
Summer (Jun–Aug)
- Light shorts and T-shirts
- Long-sleeve shirt (sun and ticks)
- Light jacket or hoodie for evenings (mountain chill)
- Raincoat or windbreaker
- Cap / sun hat
- Trekking shoes (not sandals)
- Spare shoes in case of rain
- Swimsuit for river and hot tub
- SPF 30+ sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Sunglasses
- Small backpack for day hikes
- Water bottle (refill at local springs)
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
- Warm sweater (fleece or wool)
- Mid-season jacket
- Raincoat — mandatory
- Light hat, gloves
- Waterproof boots
- Hooded jacket
Autumn is most beautiful but most temperamental — pack for everything.
Spring (Apr–May)
- Mid-season waterproof jacket
- Wellies for muddy trails (May–early June)
- Mosquito net for moshkara
- Warm sweater for evenings
- Sunglasses (spring sun is bright)
With kids (any season)
- Double clothing sets (wet → spare)
- Favourite toy (new places make kids anxious)
- Kids' meds (local pharmacies may not stock them)
- Diapers / hygiene
- Car seat
- Kids' sunscreen
- Snacks and water for the drive
For hikers
- Trekking poles
- Trekking socks (anti-blister)
- Gaiters (if wet)
- Map / navigation (Maps.me works offline)
- Whistle (emergencies)
- DEET 25%+ tick spray
Food and drink
If you plan to cook (our kitchen is fully equipped):
- Spices from home (local shops are weak)
- Good coffee/tea (if picky)
- Special baby food (if needed)
- Alcohol — Mizhhirya has decent wine and moonshine, but bringing your own is easier
What NOT to bring
- Extra clothes (3 days = 3 sweaters, not 7)
- Big suitcases (forest road is not for spinner wheels)
- Electric kettle (we have it)
- Bed linen (also covered)
What we already have
- Bed linen and towels
- Cookware, cutlery, pots, pans
- Kettle, microwave, oven
- Wi-Fi, Smart TV in every cottage
- Ironing board and iron
- Basic household chemistry
- BBQ grill and firewood
