What is a Carpathian Hot Tub (Chan) and Why It's Good for You
If you keep seeing the word "chan" in Carpathian estate ads but don't fully grasp what it is — here is the complete answer from people who built one and have been lighting the fire under it every week for 8 years.
What it is
A Carpathian chan is a traditional Hutsul bathing ritual. A large iron cauldron (typically black steel) sits over an open fire. The water is mountain-fresh. A freshly brewed infusion is added — pine, juniper, mint, thyme, oregano. Guests soak in 38–42 °C water. Around them — forest, fresh air, sometimes snow.
This is not a sauna (dry air there) and not a jacuzzi (no herbs, no fire). It is its own tradition — like the Finnish sauna, Japanese onsen, Turkish hammam: each culture has its "hot therapy".
Origin
The chan dates back to Hutsul shepherds in the high Carpathians. After long days on their feet and damp nights, they needed a way to warm to the bone. A big cauldron, firewood, mountain herbs — a simple and accessible solution. In its current "tourist service" form the chan appeared in the 2000s, but as a folk practice it has been around for centuries.
How a session works
1. Heating (1.5–2 h). The host lights the fire. Water warms gradually. Schedule in advance.
2. Herb brewing. Fresh infusion in a separate vessel. The mix changes with the season.
3. Guest prep. Change in the cabin, warm shower.
4. First soak (10–15 min). Body adjusts to the heat.
5. Air break (5–10 min). Tea, fresh air.
6. Second soak (15–20 min). Longer now.
7. Break. Tea, fruit.
8. Third soak (up to 30 min). Longest and most relaxed.
9. Closing. Warm rinse, warm shower, rest in the cottage.
Standard session — 2 hours. Many guests extend to 3–4 hours.
Physical benefits
- Muscle relaxation — back, neck, shoulders, lower back
- Faster metabolism and detoxification via sweating
- Better circulation (vessel pump effect)
- Pain relief in muscles and joints
- Lower inflammation markers in chronic inflammation
Respiratory:
- Herbal steam inhalation (pine, juniper — antibacterial)
- Helps prevent and recover from URIs, bronchitis, rhinitis
- Better mucosal condition
Skin:
- Open pores, cleansing
- Better blood flow — skin "breathes"
- Possible reduction in acne/dermatitis (individual)
Mental benefits
- Stress and anxiety relief (well-documented for hot therapies)
- Deeper sleep that night and beyond
- Endorphin release (natural antidepressant effect)
- "Reset" — many guests describe feeling "back from vacation" after one session
- Social bonus — 3–4 people in a tub talk calmly, no phones, different wavelength

Chan vs sauna
| Criterion | Chan | Sauna |
|---|---|---|
| Medium | Wet, in water | Dry/wet air |
| Temperature | 38–42 °C | 70–100 °C |
| Session length | 15–30 min per dip | 5–15 min per dip |
| Cardio load | Moderate | High |
| Therapeutic effect | Relaxation + phytotherapy | Deep heating |
| Accessibility for seniors | Better | Worse (high temp) |
The chan is often recommended for those who find sauna too intense.
How often
If healthy — 1–2 times per week is optimal. Courses of 5–10 sessions with 2–3 days between. Many guests do the chan every evening during their stay — fine if the body tolerates it.
