Hiking to the Shypit Waterfall from Soimy — Full Guide
The Shypit waterfall is one of the seven natural wonders of Ukraine and a must-see for anyone visiting Zakarpattia. From our estate in Soimy village it is 24 km away — about a 35–40 minute drive. In this guide: how to get there, time budget, what to see along the way, common mistakes.
Quick facts
- Distance from Soimy: 24 km
- Driving time: 35–40 min
- Walking from the parking: 10–15 min (~500 m)
- Waterfall height: 14 m
- Best months: May–June (peak water)
- Access: year-round, free (parking ~50 UAH)
How to drive from Soimy
1. From Soimy, head north through Mizhhirya (~5 km).
2. Continue on the Volovets road through Pidpolozzia and Maydan.
3. Turn off to Pylypets (signposted).
4. In Pylypets, follow "Shypit" signs to the parking.
5. From the parking — a wide path, ~500 m, 10–15 min.
An alternative route runs through Kushnytsia and Volovets, roughly 10 km longer but scenic.
Public transport
Direct buses from Soimy are rare. Options:
- Taxi Mizhhirya → Pylypets — ~500 UAH one way
- Mizhhirya → Volovets marshrutka, get off in Pylypets
- Transfer from the estate (we can arrange)
If you stay with us, your own car is by far easiest.
What to see along the way
- Maydan village — old wooden houses, ridge views
- Free mineral springs by the road
- Kolba viewpoint above Pidpolozzia
- Pylypets village — carved Hutsul houses
- Pylypets chairlift — combine with the waterfall in one day
At the waterfall
Shypit is not a single jet but a cascade of parallel streams over natural stone slabs. You hear the roar from a distance. Below is a small natural pool with icy water.
The best photo angle is from the right side of the main flow, lower on the path. Best light — early morning or mid-afternoon (noon spray blocks the sun).
Suggested one-day combo from our estate
- Morning: Shypit (1–2 hours including parking)
- Lunch: Pylypets café — banush and trout
- Afternoon: Mt. Hemba chairlift (1500 m altitude, panoramic views)
- Return: ~17:00 — dinner at the estate, hot tub
This is the classic "day two" for our guests.
Common tourist mistakes
1. Sneakers instead of trekking shoes — the path is wet and slick.
2. No raincoat — the spray reaches the path.
3. Visiting at noon on weekends — crowds.
4. Trying to swim — water ~4 °C, hypothermia risk.
5. Skipping the mineral springs on the way.
Our tips
- Best time: weekdays 09:00–11:00
- Take: raincoat, water, snack, waterproof phone case
- Kids: from age 4, path is short but wet
- Winter: snowshoes recommended
